THURSDAY, APRIL 6 AT 7 PM
FIRST THURSDAY PROGRAM – DOUG BANE

“Fine Art & Restoration”

Douglas Bane, the owner of the Gun Point Cove Gallery on Orr’s Island will talk about how to care for your art work.  He will discuss cleaning and restoring art in your home.  In 2016 Doug undertook the cleaning and varnishing of the Orr’s Island Bridge, 1888 painting bequeathed to the Library.

“Weaving:  History and Practice”

Great Island resident Mallory Waldman will bring 2 looms and share her love for the craft with a little history and demonstration of what can be accomplished at home.

FIRST THURSDAY PROGRAM – CURT DALE CLARK

“Maine State Music Theatre”

Curt will preview the 2017 Performance Season at MSMT.  He will have with him the new 2017 class of 8 performance interns who will sing for us.

SATURDAY, JUNE 10 AT 5PM
PIHCINTU MULTICULTURAL CHORUS at the HARPSWELL COMMUNITY SCHOOL
The ORR’S ISLAND LIBRARY along with the HARPSWELL COMMUNITY SCHOOL PTO is sponsoring a FREE CONCERT featuring the PIHCINTU MULTICULTURAL CHORUS from Portland.  This unique chorus of young women from Burundi, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, North Sudan, Republic of Sudan (South Sudan), Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Uganda, Vietnam, and Yemen, along with children whose families have been in the United States for generations have formed a powerful bond.  The immigrant children are restarting their lives in Maine after fleeing devastating realities in their homelands.  They are using the healing power of music to touch the hearts of all who hear them.  We are thrilled to to welcome the Pihcintu Chorus to Harpswell, and we hope you can join us for this special performance.  A reception with refreshments will follow the concert.

“Film:  My Life as a Photojournalist”

Bailey Island resident and world renowned photojournalist, Robert Freson will present a film made of his career.  The library hosts the Robert Freson Photography Book Collection.

SATURDAY, JULY 22 AT 2PM
FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT by students from the BOWDOIN INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL at the Orr’s Island Union Church (on Rte. 24, Harpswell Island Rd. next to the Orr’s Island Cemetery)

The Orr’s Island Library is hosting musicians from the Bowdoin International Music Festival for our second annual Community Concert.  This free concert offers an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music in a lovely historical venue.  The concert will be followed by a reception with refreshments and an opportunity to visit with the musicians.

“Tourism Comes to Harpswell”

Harpswell historian Edward Phinney will talk about the emerging tourist trade in Maine and Harpswell with an emphasis on the the 19th Century.

FIRST THURSDAY PROGRAM – PAMELA WHITE

“Leadership & 2017 Perspective”

Maine native and Orr’s Island resident Pamela White is the former US Ambassador to Gambia and Haiti.  Pam will speak to the need for effective leadership in the world.  She will also offer her updated perspective on the US political scene.

FIRST THURSDAY PROGRAM – JOE MONTISANO

“Coastal Humane Society”

Executive Director and Orr’s Island resident, Joe Montisano will review the successes of CHS during its 65 year history of service to numerous midcoast communities.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7 AT 7 PM
FIRST THURSDAY PROGRAM – MELINDA RICHTER

“Let’s Talk and Taste Chocolate”

Melinda will review the origins of her candy company, The Island Candy Company.  Her family inspiration and legacy led her to bring an island tradition back for a new generation.  She will treat us to holiday sample.  Yum.
